Cannery Row may be now best known for its more than 25 restaurants, numerous shops, and luxury hotels, but the area – first made world-famous in John Steinbeck’s 1945 fictional best seller of the same name – dates back to the 1850s when it was a fishing empire for Chinese immigrant families. There’s also the high-profile downtown Monterey museum, Dali17, which isn’t just home to the country’s largest private collection of Salvador Dalí work, but it celebrates the visionary artist’s time spent living in Monterey (from 1941 to 1948).
